Mary Roach, dubbed “America’s funniest science writer” by the Washington Post, has fans hungry for more weird stories of the body’s inner working with her latest book Gulp: Adventures on the Alimentary Canal. Roach, who provided a blurb for Jason Karlawish’s Open Wound, also gives a shout to that book in Gulp itself, calling Open Wound ”a fine and sleuthily researched historical novel.” Roach notes that, while Dr. William Beaumont’s thoughts on his experiments upon Alexis St. Martin are well-documented thanks to the doctor’s journals, St. Martin’s initial response to the “unusual proposition” of having his bullet wound used as a window [...]

Local newspaper Penobscot Bay Pilot interviewed David Loxterkamp, MD, on his recently-released book What Matters in Medicine: Lessons from a Life in Primary Care and about his 30 years as a family practice physician in Belfast, Maine. Dr. Loxterkamp noted that currently most doctors do not live in the community where they practice. “They don’t want patients to run into them at the YMCA or the grocery store. They like that separation.” But, he told the Pilot, “For me and for many primary care physicians immersion in the community is how we work. The community is a resource for us, not [...]

David Hemenway, author of the 2007 book Private Guns, Public Health, will speak next week at a symposium held by Massachusetts State Senator Katherine Clark discussing gun violence. Since the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary, Dr. Hemenway’s book has been regularly cited for its statistical data on the effects of guns in a community and the author himself has been sought for his views on responsible policy. Following the announcement that legislation before the Senate would not include an assault weapons ban, Dr. Hemenway participated in a roundtable discussion on Al Jazeera English, where fellow panelist Adam Winkler of the [...]

Sean Cahill, co-author with Jason Cianciotto of LGBT Youth in America’s Schools, contributed to a Huffington Post op-ed on health issues and health policies affecting the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender communities. Cahill, along with co-writers Harvey Makadon, Kellan Baker, and JoAnne Keatley, notes that until recently LGBT people “have been invisible in health care.” “Most providers do not ask about sexual orientation or gender identity, nor are they trained in the unique health care needs of LGBT people or the health disparities they experience,” the authors write. They further note that there are concerns that go beyond identity–gay/straight–and into [...]

Media Matters for America, a left-leaning watchdog group, bolstered its case against Fox News’ and the NRA’s presentation of the gun control debate with several passages and statistics from David Hemenway’s Private Guns, Public Health. Responding to Cam and Company host Cam Edwards and Fox contributor Ann Coulter, who both cited the fact that Japan’s suicide rate is higher than that of the US despite less access to firearms as evidence that guns and suicide are not linked, Media Matters notes that there could easily be other explanations for this and refers to Hemenway’s research shows that, compared with other developed [...]
